About Us

The Vassar-Chadwick Chess Club meets Monday evenings at 7PM for registration (excluding holidays).  Play normally commences at 7:30.  We sometimes host special events – such as a simul with a Grandmaster – and have weekly USCF rated tournaments that cover a variety of time controls.  Current USCF membership is mandatory to play in tournaments!  We strive each week to bring affordable competitive-class chess to the Hudson Valley.

The club meets in Rockefeller Hall on Vassar College Campus. See event schedule for details and room locations.

Stanley Chadwick (1870-1943) founded our club in 1930s, after moving to Poughkeepsie following the passing of his wife.  Previously, he helped found the Correspondence Chess League of Greater NY in 1909, and later was involved with merging the league with two others into the current Correspondence Chess League of America in 1917.  He was also an architect by trade and at one point secretary of the Brooklyn Chess Club.
