Colin is most likely the youngest champion in club history, and he earned his victory by beating 2014 champion (and club president) Chris Brooks in the final round to take the crown. An impressive performance from the young man.
Trophy winners (final score):
DCC is always tough, but this year featured 5 players with a pre-tournament rating of 2000 or higher – making Colin’s achievement (and those of the other trophy winners) even more impressive.
Trophies will be presented some time in April. See below for final standings, and Click Here for the USCF crosstable.
As shown above, Chris Brooks stands alone at 4, with Colin Denniston right behind with 3.5 points. One round remains in this year’s DCC!
Round 4 is next Monday, March 20! A couple showdowns on the first two boards will be likely. The Grand Prix will be updated again after the conclusion of the tournament.

The prize structure for this year’s Grand Prix is as follows:
- 1st – Trophy and name on plaque
- 2nd – Trophy
- Class A, B, C – Trophy
Class prizes will be based upon the maximum live rating from Labor Day through the final Equalized Match Pairings on May 15. We will have a ceremony on May 22, and perhaps a small party (before or after the blitz tournament).
Annual Meeting Results:
Chris Brooks retained his role as President for 2017. Craig Fisher did the same for Vice President. Ditto for Ernie Johnson as Secretary and Michael O’Connor for Treasurer. Ernie Johnson and Bob Simmons were added as tournament directors.
Some cost saving measures introduced last fall allowed us to roughly break even even while subsidizing last year’s Michael Rohde lecture and simul. From the Growing Leaves Swiss forward, all “significant” tournaments will appear in the TLA.

Full disclosure: The writer of this post was not able to attend the 2nd round and annual club meeting, so everything here is a matter of hearsay. From trusted sources, but still….
Before the round, club business was discussed. There will perhaps be a more in-depth report on that. For now, we just have the results of the election.
No change in the officers. Chris Brooks returns for his 2nd term as President (unlike the POTUS, he can serve for as long as he’s willing, which hopefully will be for 10-20 years). Also returning as Vice-President, Dr. Craig Fisher. Ernie Johnson stays on as Secretary (and hopefully simul organizer), and Michael O’Connor keeps the money secure as Treasurer. After a year absence, Scott Strattner comes back as co-webmaster (or “Social Media” something or other), sharing duties with Chris.
Standings after round 2, by score group (sorted within group by rating):
2.0
Chris Brooks
Colin Denniston
Ernie Johnson
Mark Courtney
1.5
Scott Strattner
Ayman Haoula
Eric Horsboll
Craig Fisher
Jurij Oracz
Followed by 9 people with 1 point, 5 with .5, and 4 with 0.
