Eric Horsboll (1943 – 2021)

Please CLICK HERE to read the obituary of a good friend of the club (and three time Dutchess County Chess Champion) who passed away earlier this month.

As mentioned in the obit, there is an Eric Horsboll Memorial Fund, part of which will go to support young chess players. From the fund page:

This fund will help keep his spirit alive by celebrating the following things he was passionate about: The Vassar Chadwick Chess Club through scholarships for young chess players (the club is already planning a Memorial Tournament in his name); a memorial bench in front of P&Gs Restaurant where we can sit and remember him, and memorial recognition on the New Paltz campus. Donations are very much appreciated, and additionally reflections of a story of remembrance would be great.  Reflections will be distributed electronically and at a memorial to be scheduled when we can gather together again, hopefully in the summer of fall.

Stanley Chadwick results

Newcomer “Untapped_Potential” didn’t leave much untapped, as he cruised through the 5 round Swiss – winning all games, and boasting a 2260 performance rating! The real person behind Untapped_Potential, Nick, is eager to play OTB once that becomes possible again. For someone who does not appear to have a USCF rating, he is quite strong and will be a force to be reckoned with.

With 3.5/5, Mark Courtney (“chadwick2000”) took 2nd place, and Ernie Johnson (“soulpower74”) captured third (on tiebreaks), with 3 out of 5. Twelve players in total participated, which is also good to see.

Look for more online events coming soon – let us known on our Facebook page, if other days and times work better for you.

First Vassar online tournament results

The Wesley So Swiss took place on Monday night – not in the illustrious halls of Vassar College, but online, lichess.org to be precise. Seven players participated, and it was a strong field (over 1900 average rating). After six rounds, the virtual dust had cleared, and Trevor Brooks captured first place (5/6), followed by Mark Courtney (4.5) and NM Alan Cantor (3.5)

First online club tournament results

Trevor Brooks captured first place (4/5, 2247 performance) in the first online club tournament that finished less than an hour ago. Seven players participated in the 5 round (G/15) event.

Second place went to Robert Wehrli (3.5, 2177 performance) and Ernie Johnson (who set up this tournament) took 3rd place with 3 points – and was the only one to win a game from Trevor.

Congrats to everyone for participating, and keep a look out for more tournaments like this in the near future!
