Trevor Brooks upset Ernie Johnson to win this latest addition to the Vassar Quads (converted to swiss). He finished with 3 points, Ernie, Shiv and Darius finished with 2. A reminder that next week, round 1 starts at 7.
Chris Brooks (2046) defeated Chris Keefe (1840) in the G60 d10 playoff to win the inaugural standalone Club Championship!
Congrats to our Chadwick Grand Prix bonus point winners, updated after the club championship:
- (4.0) Chris Brooks / Chris Keefe: 1st/2nd
- (3.5) Ernie Johnson / Peter Barkman: Class A
- (3.0) Darius Jafary: Class B
- (2.5) Ori Raz: Class C
- (2.0) Michael Guse / Taylor Dean / David Wright: Class D
Here are the results from our final round:
- (2053) Chris Brooks 0.5-0.5 Colin Denniston (2071)
- (2106) Leo Freyvert 0-1 Chris Keefe (1840)
- (1744) Harry Stenger 0-1 Ernie Johnson (1924)
- (1872) Peter Barkman 1-0 Ken Evans (1806)

- (1237) Ori Raz 0.5-0.5 David Wright (unr)
- (1218) Taylor Dean 1-0 Shreya Sudarsanam (852)
In the drama that on was boards 1 and 2, Chris played it safe against 2017 DCC Champion Colin Denniston needing only a draw to eliminate him from contention. The likely draw forced aggressive play on board 2, where Leo lost in a sacrificial attack to newcomer Chris Keefe.
A new feature added to the club for this season, the tournament will not end in tiebreaks (Brooks would win on tiebreaks in case you were wondering). Chris Brooks will play black against Chris Keefe in a playoff in room 104, or 201 next Monday! The first game will be Game 60 delay 10, a second if necessary will follow at Game 25 delay 10. Blitz would follow thereafter.
The VC grand prix will be updated shortly.
Here are the results from round 4:
- (2071) Colin Denniston 0.5-0.5 Leo Freyvert (2106)
- (2053) Chris Brooks 1-0 Robert Fanshel (1987)
- (1924) Ernie Johnson 0.5-0.5 Ken Evans (1806)
- (1840) Chris Keefe 1-0 Rasit Topaloglu (1872)
- (1811) Bob Simmons 0-1 Harry Stenger (1744)
- (1739) Michael O’Connor 0-1 Darius Jafary (1783)
- (1065) Shivansh Patel 0-1 Ori Raz (1237)
- (unr.) MIchael Guse 0-1 Taylor Dean (1218)
- (unr.) David Wright 1-0 Michael Brozycki (unr.)
Some projected pairings for Round 5:
- Board 1: (3.5) Chris Brooks v Colin Denniston (3.0)
- Board 2: (3.0) Leo Freyvert v Chris Keefe (3.0)
Playoff Implications for round 5:
- If Chris Brooks wins, tournament over.
- If everyone draws on boards 1 and 2, tournament over.
- If Colin wins and Leo/Chris draw, tournament over.
- If Chris Brooks draws, he plays winner of Leo/Chris on Nov 20. White against Leo, Black against Chris Keefe.
- If Colin wins, he plays winner of Leo/Chris on Nov 20 as black.
- Under all playoff circumstances, the playoff game will be played with a time control of G60 d10. If that game is drawn, colors are reversed and a second game played at G25 d10. Successive draws will be decided in blitz games of G3 d2 until a decisive result is reached.
A few players ventured on down to Stamford to play in last weekend’s open tournament. In the Open Section, 2017 DCC Champion Colin Denniston scored two nice wins against IM Justin Sarkar and NM Nathan Resika, and finished with 2.5/5 overall. Meanwhile down in the Under 1710 section JJ Oracz finished in a three-way tie for 2nd with 4/5. Trevor Brooks finished with a disappointing 2.5/5 in the same section. All three players are in the midst of our Club Championship, currently ongoing. Congratulations to JJ and Colin on their fine performances.

A no show for the playoff = forfeit. There must be only one club champion, and it will be determined OTB! There are prizes throughout the rating classes based on final score, still time to jump in with a full point of byes!

Our club is looking for willing participants to represent us in the 2018 Amateur Team East over President’s Day weekend. We would like to bring at least two teams of four down to Parsippany. This year, the club is willing to pay the entry fee for each team, leaving each participant with just hotel, food and travel costs. Along with prizes for certain rating classes/subclasses, special team makeup consideration will be given to our ability to capture certain prizes at the event:
- Senior team (four players 50+)
Please post on our FB page if you are interested in attending.
